What is Packaging?

Design of packaged products during the course
Oxford English dictionary defines packaging as materials used to wrap or protect goods. Fundamentally, at a utilitarian level packaging is indeed a covering, to contain, hold, and protect the contents within from getting contaminated or damaged in transportation. Sentimentally speaking, however, packaging can convey a brand, a mood, attract attention, persuade the intended audience, and communicate its contents of the package as intended by the packaging designer. This can be achieved through the use of specific packaging materials (substrates such as paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminium etc), colours, typography, printing and manufacturing methods. Therefore packaging should be understood in these two aspects:
1. PACKAGE DESIGN:
Includes the structural aspects of packaging, related to its form.
2. LABEL DESIGN:
Includes aesthetics and conveying of information. Deals with the communicative aspects of packaging.

Label design will investigate the purpose of branding a product, trade dress, need for aesthetic considerations; such as visual identity, image, typography, colour and challenges in communicating product information unambiguously.
